School of Iberian Magic / Escuela de Magia Íbera

Yesterday afternoon, Michael Toora was on his way home from his favorite bakery. He was carrying a huge white cardboard box. Within it was a scrumptious birthday cake. When Alpin appeared from out of nowhere and held him up at a crossroads like a vulgar highwayman, Michael assumed it was the cake his cousin was after. But this time Alpin wanted something else. And with some help from his mum, he got what he wanted.

Ayer por la tarde Michael Toora estaba camino a casa desde su pastelería favorita. Cargaba una enorme caja de cartón blanco. En el interior de la caja había una preciosa tarta de rechupete. Cuando Alpin apareció de la nada y le detuvo en el camino cual un vulgar salteador, Michael pensó que era la tarta lo que ansiaba su primo. Pero Alpin quería otra cosa. Y con un poco de ayuda de su madre, consiguió lo que quería.  

So at a quarter to the witching hour, just as infernal etiquette commands, and on a moonless night, Alpin and Arley were once more standing outside the door to the cave of Salamanca, rumored school of the occult and possibly a gate to hell.

Así que a menos cuarto para la hora bruja, tal y como dictan las normas de etiqueta infernal y en una noche sin luna, Alpin y Arley se hallaban por segunda vez ante la puerta de la cueva de Salamanca, rumoreada escuela de lo oculto y posible portal al infierno. 

They were accompanied by the five individuals they needed to recruit to be allowed to cross that doorway. So it was quite likely they would get to enter.

Iban acompañados  por los cinco individuos que necesitaban reclutar para poder traspasar ese umbral. Así que era bastante posible que lograsen entrar.

Michael

I can´t believe this. I’m going to celebrate my birthday in hell. It´s even worse than any other year. This sort of thing only happens to me.

No me lo puedo creer. Voy a celebrar mi cumpleaños en el infierno. Es todavía peor que cualquier otro año. Esto sólo me pasa a mí.

Alpin

 

Nonsense! All the people who dwell in hell celebrate their birthdays there. There´s nothing special about this. You´re a drama queen.

¡Tonterías! Toda la gente que habita en el infierno celebra su cumple allí. No tiene nada de especial. Eres una diva del drama.

 

Michael

How about if I turn on my heels and leave you here? I´m only here because your mother implored me to accompany you, wailing and fainting. Where do you have the letter of reference your mum wrote to recommend us to the devil?

¡A que me doy media vuelta y te dejo plantado! Sólo estoy aquí porque me lo ha pedido tu madre con lloros y desmayos. ¿Dónde tienes la carta de recomendación que te dio para el demonio?

I have it in my knapsack. It fell out of Alpin´s bag and I thought it might be safer in mine. It´s got a few ketchup stains on it, and it smells like food from a burger blended with the fascinating night blooming jasmine perfume on Mrs. Dullahan's stationery. But I suppose it will have to do.   

La tengo yo en mi mochila. A Alpin se le cayó de la suya y pensé que estaría más segura en la mía. Tiene manchas de kétchup y aroma a hamburguesas del burger mezclado con el fascinante perfume de dama de noche que lleva el papel que usa la Señora del Cochero de la Muerte, pero supongo que tendrá que servir.

I´m not sure it´s safe to have dealings with the devil, innocent as they may be, like asking for a pencil is. In my time, this was ferociously discouraged. But if you insist on seeing him, lads, we won´t leave your side for a second. 

No sé yo si hacemos bien en parlar con el demonio, aunque sea para algo tan inocente como pedirle un lápiz. En  mis tiempos se desaconsejaba ferozmente cualquier trato con él. Pero si os empeñáis en tenerlo, niños, nosotros no os dejaremos solos ni un segundo.

Yo tengo muchísimo miedo, pero sólo de ser demasiado pequeño para contar como el séptimo visitante. A ver si no se va a abrir la puerta por mí culpa.

Se abrirá. Tu alma es tan grande como la de cualquiera, y eso es lo que cuenta aquí. Pero procura no ponerte cerca de mí, que si me despisto puede que te dé un manotazo si te mueves. El instinto es difícil de controlar, incluso para un gato educado como yo. 

And the door did open. Within the cave, seven students were giving their end of the year projects a finishing touch. In infernal schools, there never are holidays.   

Efectivamente, la puerta se abrió. En el interior de la cueva, siete estudiantes remataban sus proyectos de fin de curso. En las escuelas del infierno nunca hay vacaciones.

There are no pencils here, nuts. We write with blood, sweat, tears and coal. Have you brought some food with you? You smell like burgers. 

Aquí no hay lápices, chalados. Nosotros escribimos con sangre, sudor, lágrimas  y carbón. ¿Habéis traído algo de comer? Oléis a burger.

Now that he´s mentioned it, I remember seeing the class dunce laughing by himself as he stared at a pencil.
