Nauta´s Mini Mythology: The Argo / Mini Mitología de Nauta: El Argos

Flaccus Intrepidus Nauta

We were saying yesterday…Yes. I know it wasn´t precisely yesterday I last appeared on this blog, but it feels like only yesterday now that some of our troubles seem to be over.

No, the illustrator of this section and I were not paralyzed by the Medusa´s head destined for a wax museum that came to life during Michael´s Halloween party after having been put in a jumbisack soaking with the miraculous Shyboy oil.

We were stranded on an island when the humble replica of the Argo I ordered built to inspire the illustrator sank spectacularly into the depths of the dark Aegean Sea.

It took me a while to build a second replica of the Argo – one that could float -  and another while to row it back home all by myself. This last was no mean task, considering the Argo is designed to be manned by fifty people.

The illustrator, who is a woman but no Amazon, refused to help at all and is still very upset about having lost a portfolio full of drawings in the shipwreck. She did nothing but sulk throughout our adventure, though this morning she did send me a new picture of the ship we returned in. So I have a little something to illustrate this post with.

Well, there you have it. That´s the Argo. The ship Jason and a crew of heroes known to the world collectively as the Argonauts sailed from Iolcos to Colchis in, to fetch the Golden Fleece for the usurper Pelias.

Ah, she was an extraordinary ship! She was built by the ingeneous shipwright Argus with the aid of the goddess Athena herself and was consecrated to the goddess Hera, who took a personal interest in protecting her during her voyage. She was possibly the first ship with something like a GPS device, for her prow could speak and give advice because it was partly made of magical wood from the sacred forest of Dodona, a place where people went on pilgrimage to hear priestesses called doves predict the future.

The original Argos is up in the sky now. It has been transformed into the constellation of Argo Navis.

I wrote an epic poem about the voyage of the Argo. It´s called the Argonautica and it’s a very interesting read.

We found the pictures of the constellation Argo Navis and the poet Apollonius Rhodius in Images from the Internet.
