Well, it´s not precisely raining cats and dogs. I would say that today we could learn to fry eggs on the sidewalk. But if you prefer, we could review weather vocabulary. And we can learn a little about Japanese art while we are at it.

 

Pues no está precisamente diluviando y cayendo la gota gorda. Yo diría que hoy podríamos aprender a freír huevos en la acera. Pero si prefiere, podemos repasar vocabulario del tiempo y de paso aprender algo de arte japonés. 

SEASONS - LAS ESTACIONES

spring - primavera

summer – verano

autumn, fall – otoño, la caída

winter – invierno

dry season – temporada seca

rainy season / wet season – temporada de lluvia

Indian Summer – Veranillo de San Miguel (29 septiembre) y / o Veranillo de San Martin (11 de noviembre)

CLIMATE TYPES – TIPOS DE CLIMAS

Tropical – tropical (includes tropical wet and tropical wet and dry / incluye tropical húmedo y tropical húmedo y seco)

Dry - seco (includes Arid and Semi-arid / incluye árido y semiárido)

Moderate – moderado (includes Mediterranean, Humid Subtropical, Marine West Coast / incluye mediterraneo, subtropical húmedo, Costa Oeste Marina)

Continental - continental  (includes Humid Continental and Subartic / incluye continental húmedo y subártico)

Polar - polar  (includes Tundra and Ice Cap / incluye tundra y clima de cima nevada)
Highland or Alpine Climate - clima de tierras altas o alpino
  

ADJECTIVES / ADJETIVOS:

above zero – por encima de cero

airless – sin aire

balmy – templado y agradable

below zero – por debajo de cero

biting (wind) – (viento) que muerde

boiling (hot) – muy caluroso, hasta el punto de sentirse hervir

breezy – hay brisa

bright - luminoso

changeable – variable, cambiante

chilly – fresco, algo frio

clear - despejado

cloudy – nubloso, encapotado (eje. cielo encapotado)

cold – frío

cool – fresco

damp – húmedo

dark - oscuro

fair – bueno , templado, hermoso y favorable  (fair weather – buen tiempo)

foggy – neblinoso, nubloso, con niebla

freezing – helador

frosty – escarchado

frozen – congelado

gray, grey - gris

halcyon – tranquilo, bello, feliz  (halcyon days = días dorados)

hazy - brumoso

high – alta (por eje. temperatura)

hot – caluroso, caliente

humid – húmedo

ice cap – cima nevada, casquete nevado

ice-cold – helador, congelador

icy – que hay hielo

low – baja (por ejemplo, temperatura)

mild - suave

misty - brumoso

muddy – denagoso, lodoso, enlodado

muggy – húmedo y caliente hasta el punto de resultar algo agobiante

overcast – cielo cubierto

parched – muy seco, muerto de sed

rainy – lluvioso

scorching  – abrasador

shady –  sombreado, umbroso

slushy – hay mezcla de nieve medio derretida, hielo y barro

snowy – nevado, nevoso

sticky - pegajoso

stormy – tormentoso

stuffy – cargado (eje. ambiente cargado), hace calor y falta aire

sunburnt – quemado por el sol

suntanned - bronceado
