Nauta's Mini Mythology - Nike / Mini mitología de Nauta - Niké

Nike / Niké

I'm not squashing the pigeon. I'm very, very light and nobody finds me hard to bear.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen. This month there will be a lot of talk about victories in peaceful competitions. First there was football and in a few days we will have the Olympics. We hope the goddess Nike, whom we Romans call Victoria, continues to bless Hispania with her laurel crowns. From here, we congratulate the footballers and  we wish everyone who will participate in the Olympic Games the best of luck.

As for Nike, what more can we say than that she is and has always been possibly the most desired woman in the world? In fact, the Athenians were so determined to have her always with them that they cut the wings off the image they had of this goddess in her temple in their city so she would never leave them. They called the wingless deity Nike Aptera, which means just that, wingless victory.

In Art, you will often find Nike driving a chariot. She was the charioteer of Zeus, king of the gods, whenever he rode to battle. You will also find her in the shape of a little doll next to the goddess Athena. They have a lot in common and therefore get along very well. Some people say they are the same person.

Athena: You're so cute. Like me when I was little. You're such a doll!
Nike: I will always be your dolly! With me on your side, you're invincible.

Atenea: Eres monísima, como yo de pequeña. ¡Una auténtica muñequita!
Niké: ¡Siempre seré tu muñequita! Conmigo de tu parte, serás invencible.

Emily Dickinson

       Success is counted sweetest
By those who ne'er succeed.
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need.
Not one of all the purple host
Who took the flag to-day
Can tell the definition,
So clear, of victory
As he, defeated, dying,
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Burst agonized and clear!

El éxito es tenido por más dulce
por quienes nunca lo consiguen.
Comprender un nectar
Requiere la más desesperada necesidad.
Ni uno de la hueste purpúrea
Que hoy ha conquistado la bandera
Puede definir
Con tanta claridad la victoria
Como el que yace muriendo derrotado
Y en cuyo oído prohibido
Los distantes acordes del triunfo
Estallan ¡agonizantes y claros!
