Lord Nelson

This post is about an Englishman who had to do with Spain when it was being run by Napoleon. We're publishing it because of the 1812 Josie.

Horatio, Lord Nelson / Horacio, Lord Nelson

Admiral Nelson was born on 29 September 1758. He joined the navy when he was thirteen years old. From the very first day he stepped on a ship he was seasick, and he would suffer from seasickness for the rest of his life, but that did not stop him from becoming Britain’s most popular sailor.

Nelson was brave, clever and original in his way of doing things. Because he had a great sense of duty and was very professional but at the same time knew how to care for his subordinates, the men who joined the navy all wanted to serve under Admiral Nelson sooner than under anyone else.

Nelson fought in many battles. He won some and he lost some, and during these battles he lost an eye and an arm, but his greatest victory was at Trafalgar.

The battle of Trafalgar is the most famous naval victory in English history. In it, the British fought against the French and the Spanish, who were together because Napoleon had taken over Spain and the Spanish fleet had to fight whomever the French pleased. In 1805 Napoleon was trying to invade England, and Nelson was in the Mediterranean when he was told a French and Spanish fleet had sailed out of the harbor in Cadiz. It was clear they would meet in battle.

Back then, when the commander of a fleet wanted to send a signal to all the men on the different ships, he asked his signal officer to hoist flags that held the meaning of whatever he wanted to say. Just before the battle, Admiral Nelson asked his signal lieutenant to hoist this signal to his troops: England expects every man will do his duty. This has become a famous quote in British history.

The battle began at four o´clock in the morning of 21 October 1805. Thirty three French and Spanish ships participated in this battle, against 27 British ships. Admiral Nelson was on a ship called the Victory. Its captain wasThomas Hardy, who was a great friend of Nelson’s. Hardy asked Nelson to change his coat, which had many military decorations, so that the French would not recognize him and target him, but Nelson said it was too late to change his jacket.

During the battle, Nelson walked back and forth on the deck of the Victory giving orders until he was shot by a French sniper. It was about half past one p.m. He told Hardy he believed that his wound was mortal. He was carried below deck, his face covered with a handkerchief so as not to alarm the men fighting above. In the picture above, the man with papers in his hand is Captain Hardy.

Below deck, Nelson, who knew he was going to die, asked Hardy to look after his family. Nelson had married a widow named Frances Nevis Nisbet, but while campaigning in Italy he met Emma Hamilton, who was possibly the most famous beauty of her time. They fell madly in love and their love affair became as famous as they were. When people speak of famous couples, such as Romeo and Juliet, Anthony and Cleopatra or Napoleon and Josephine, they also mention Horatio and Emma. At the time of his death, Nelson was living with his beloved Emma and their daughter Horatia, and it was them Hardy promised to look after. Nelson also asked Hardy to kiss him goodbye, which Hardy did twice. Before he died, Nelson was heard to say, “Thank God I have done my duty,” and his last words are said to have been “God and my country.”

Emma, Lady Hamilton

Nelson died at four thirty p.m., three hours after he was shot. His body was not cast into the ocean as were the bodies of most men who died at sea. It was put in a cask full of brandy, camphor and myrrh, which were meant to preserve it. The Victory was towed to Gibraltar, where the body was placed in a coffin and taken to England where it was given a state funeral. Nelson was interred at St. Paul’s Cathedral. A monument to Nelson known as Nelson’s column stands today in London’s Trafalgar Square. It is one of the most famous landmarks in London.
