The woman in the picture below is very dangerous to have dealings with. She appears at first as very little and weak, but soon starts growing and can reach more than an XXXL size many times multiplied. Her name is Eris, which means Discord, and her sole occupation is to make people fight, almost always with tragic results. She is so good at her job that Mars, the god of war, fondly calls her his sister.

Es muy peligroso relacionarse con la mujer de la imagen de abajo. Al principio se manifiesta como muy pequeñita y endeble, pero pronto se crece y llega a alcanzar un tamaño varias veces XXXL. Se llama Eris, que significa Discordia, y su única ocupación es lograr que la gente se pelee, casi siempre con resultados trágicos. Es tan buena en su oficio que Marte, el dios de la guerra, la llama cariñosamente su hermana.



The most notorious bit of trouble Eris caused was a conflict known as the Trojan War. It was between the Greeks and the Trojans and the latter lost and saw their city razed and burnt to cinders. Today I will explain how and why this war began. This story is known as the Myth of the Apple of Discord.

La más sonada de las broncas causadas por Eris fue un conflicto que conocemos como la Guerra de Troya. Esta guerra sucedió entre griegos y troyanos y estos últimos perdieron y vieron su ciudad arrasada y reducida a cenizas. Hoy voy a explicar cómo y por qué comenzó esta guerra. Esta historia se conoce como el mito de la manzana de la discordia.

Many, many years ago, the wedding of the year was that of Peleus and Thetis. Everybody who was anybody was invited to it, and all were very pleased to be so. The goddess of discord, however, was itching for a fight because she had not been asked to attend. She had been left out because she was notorious for causing trouble wherever she went and was far from being the kind of  guest you would want at one of your parties. But Eris was not the type to shrivel up when being snubbed and didn’t hesitate to crash the party. She made a grand entrance right in the middle of the wedding banquet and threw a golden apple at those present. It was inscribed with the word “Kallisti,” which in Greek means “For the Most Beautiful.”

Hace muchos, muchísimos años, la boda del año fue la de Peleo y Tetis. Todo el mundo que se preciaba de ser alguien estaba invitado a esta boda y todos estaban muy orgullosos de asistir. La diosa de la discordia, sin embargo, estaba muy picada porque su presencia no había sido requerida. No la habían invitado porque era notorio su afán de reventar cualquier evento al que asistía, y distaba mucho de ser la clase de persona que quieres que asista a tus fiestas. Pero Eris no era de los que se cortan al no ser invitados y no dudo en presentarse sin invitación. Hizo una gran entrada, irrumpiendo en mitad del banquete de bodas, y lanzó una manzana de oro a los que estaban ahí congregados. En la manzana había inscrito “Kallisti,” que en griego quiere decir “Para la más bella.”

Unfortunately, three of the goddesses present were drawn out. They took Discord’s challenge seriously and each of them simply had to be the one to take the apple home. Zeus, king of the gods, knew the three were very arrogant and was aware how vengeful and dangerous they could be if they were crossed. He did not want to have to face the consequences of making this decision himself, so he decided to name some unfortunate mortal judge in his stead. The poor fellow he chose for this office was a young and handsome Trojan prince named Paris, who was at that moment frolicking on Mount Ida with his wife, a nymph named Oenone.

Desafortunadamente, tres de las diosas que estaban presentes respondieron a esta provocación. Se tomaron en serio el reto de Eris y cada una estaba decidida a ser la que se llevase esa manzana a casa. Zeus, rey de los dioses, sabía muy bien lo prepotentes que eran las tres diosas y estaba al tanto de lo vengativas y peligrosas que podían ser si no se salían con la suya. No quería tener que bregar con las consecuencias que acarrearía tomar semejante decisión, así que decidió nombrar a algún desdichado mortal juez en su lugar. El pobre desgraciado que eligió para desempeñar esta función fue un joven y apuesto príncipe troyano llamado Paris, que en ese preciso momento estaba retozando en el Monte Ida con su esposa, una ninfa llamada Oenone.

Zeus sent his messenger, the wing-heeled Mercury, a god we will have more to say about next month, to pass the hot potato – in this case the golden apple – to Paris, while the three goddesses bathed at the Idan Spring to make themselves more beautiful before the Trojan youth passed judgement.

Zeus envió a su mensajero, Hermes Mercurio, el de los talones alados, un dios del que tendremos más que decir el mes que viene, a pasarle la pelota – en este caso la manzana de oro – a Paris. Mientras Mercurio le contaba los pormenores al joven troyano, las tres diosas se dieron un baño en la fuente de Ida para lucir aun más guapas durante el juicio.

Paris examined each of the goddesses in private, and while he was at it, they tried to bribe him. Hera, queen of the gods and model of Greek wives, offered him political power. She could make him ruler of mighty kingdoms. Athena, goddess of intelligence, offered to teach him the strategies needed to be always victorious in battle. Aphrodite, goddess of love, said she would give him the most beautiful woman in the world for a lover in exchange of the apple.

Paris examinó a cada una por separado, y mientras estaba en ello, todas intentaron sobornarle. Hera, reina de los dioses y modelo de las esposas griegas, le ofreció poder político. Podía hacerle dueño de importantes reinos. Atenea, diosa de la inteligencia, se ofreció a enseñarle las estrategias necesarias para ser siempre vencedor en cualquier batalla. Afrodita, diosa del amor, dijo que le entregaría la mujer más guapa del mundo para que fuese su amante a cambio de la manzana.

Paris never explained his choice, so we cannot be sure of his reasons for selecting Aphrodite, but it was to her that he gave the golden apple. She kept her promise and made Helen of Sparta, the most beautiful mortal woman in the world, fall in love with Paris. Helen left her Greek husband, Menelaus, and eloped with Paris, who also abandoned his wife Oenone to be with Helen.

Paris nunca explicó su elección, así que no podemos saber con exactitud por qué eligió a Afrodita, pero fue a esta diosa a la que adjudicó la manzana de oro. Ella cumplió con su promesa, e hizo que Elena de Esparta, la mortal más guapa del mundo, se enamorase de Paris. Elena abandonó a su marido, el griego Menelao, y se fugó con Paris, que también dejó a su mujer Oenone para estar con Elena.

As was to be expected, Hera and Athena were far from pleased at the outcome of this contest. To punish Paris, they urged the Greek Menelaus to stir up his compatriots and attack Troy. And that is how the most famous war in antiquity began. One of the casualties of this war was Achilles, the son of Peleus and Thetis. the couple that had provoked the wrath of Eris by not inviting her to their wedding. Thus did Discord avenge this offense.  

Como era de esperar, Hera y Afrodita no estaban conformes con el resultado de este concurso. Para fastidiar a Paris, alentaron al griego Menelao a convencer a sus compatriotas de que había que atacar Troya. Y así es como empezó la guerra más famosa de la antigüedad. En ella murió. además del apuntador troyano, Aquiles, el hijo de Peleo y Tetis, los novios de aquella boda a la que Eris no había sido invitada, con lo que la venganza de la Discordia  fue redonda.
