We are almost at the year's end and today we have with us the three most powerful beings in Greek and Roman Mythology. Meet the Fates. Surely you have heard of these sisters. The Greek Moirae, known as the Parcae in Roman mythology, are Clotho the Spinner, Lachesis the Apportioner and Atropos the Shearer. Together they control the destinies of both mortals and gods.

Estamos casí a fin de año y hoy tenemos con nosotros a los tres seres más poderosos de la mitología Greco-Romana. Os presento a las Moiras griegas, en Roma llamadas las Parcas. Estoy seguro de que habéis oído hablar de estas hermanas. Son Cloto, la hilandera, Láquesis, la repartidora de suerte y Átropos, la inevitable podadora. Juntas controlan los destinos de mortales y de dioses.



When a child is born, it is because Clotho has spun the thread of his or her life. Lachesis then has three days to measure this thread and determine how long each life will be and what it will be like. Finally, Atropos will cut the thread where and when her sister Lachesis indicates she should, thus ending the life of this person. How this will happen is up to her.

Cuando nace un niño/a, es porque Cloto ha hilado la hebra de su vida. Entonces Láquesis tiene tres días para medir este hilo, decidiendo lo que va a durar esta vida y cómo va a ser. Finalmente, Átropos cortará el hilo cuando y donde su hermana Láquesis indique que debe hacerlo, poniendo de este modo fin a la vida de dicha persona. El cómo es cosa suya.

Since we are all subject to the whims of these three ladies and even the gods fear them, let us hope they always act kindly by us. If they are not propitious, there is little we can do, no matter how hard we try.

Puesto que todos estamos sujetos a los caprichos de estas tres señoras e incluso los dioses las temen, esperemos que siempre tengan a bien ser amables con nosotros. Si no nos son propicias, poco hay que podamos hacer para mejorar nuestra suerte, hagamos lo que hagamos.
