Rare Ben / Singular Ben

Don Quijote

If like Sancho you think jumping a queue is a big thing, guess what the gentleman I'm having dinner with tonight got away with just because he knew Latin.

Ben Jonson

I killed a man in a drunken brawl but I was not sentenced to death for it because in Sixteenth Century England the law was that anyone who could read Latin could not be executed. All they could do was brand the letter M on my thumb.I call that a good reason to learn languages.

Sancho Panza

How dreadful! Why do you want to have dinner with a person like this?

Don Quijote

Well, things were different back then. Remember people and times were even rougher than they are today, or weren´t they? And this is rare Ben Jonson. Mozart is coming too.

Mozart

It is said that I put music to Ben Jonson´s famous lyric love poem "To Celia," some two centuries after he wrote it. This is just like me.

Here is Ben Jonson´s "To Celia" with a Spanish translation by us of the said poem below.

Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss within the cup
And I´ll not ask for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove´s own nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.

I sent thee of late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee
As giving it the hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent´st it back to me;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear
Not of itself but thee!

No a si misma, ¡sino a ti!

And to encourage you to learn to sing this poem that became a song, we will say that it is frequent for highschool students and students of music and English literature to give public renditions of it. In the video below you can watch and listen to one. We imagine there was a girl named Celia among the public.

We found the video and all the images in this post on the Internet. The picture of the gentleman serenading Celia is by John Millar Watt, who, incidentally, is credited with having invented the comic strip. But that´s another story.
