Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Laverna / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Laverna

Nauta

We´re going to feature a very Roman goddess this month. Her name is Laverna, and she´s as shady as they come. So few people have ever gotten to see her face that many artists depict her headless.
But she´s got a face and a head alright, and a lot of cheek, covered by a grey cloak.

Laverna prefers to live in the dark because she is the goddess of thieves. People who steal things can hide them safely in a cave that is sacred to her. I don´t know how they can be safe there, because there are usually more than forty thieves lurking about her grotto. Laverna´s chief worshippers are the Laverniones. In the picture, they are checking out their loot or booty. Also in the picture is a pack of wolves. The wolf is Laverna´s favorite animal.

Laverna´s devotees are many and varied - there are pickpockets, who work best in crowded places and burglars, who break into houses, especially during the holidays, and cat thieves, who scale up to the highest places, like hotel windows. There are also shoplifters, who filch things in shops, embezzlers and conpersons who make you trust them first so you won´t suspect they are after your money. Lately, there are also identity thieves on the Internet. But these are only a few kinds of crooks. There are a lot more. Some people can even steal legally, so watch it unless you want to get ripped off.

"Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," is an exciting story about robbers. You can find it in practically any bookstore or library, sometimes on its own, sometimes as part of "The Thousand and One Nights."

Sancho Panza

There´s an old Spanish saying that says the sentence for whoever robs a thief is a hundred years of pardon.

Little Lazarus

Victor Hugo

Not everywhere and not always. I wrote a novel about a man who stole a bit of bread and spent nineteen years in jail as a result.

Jean Valjean

When I got out of jail, things became even more complicated. I became a force for good, but even so I had to hide for the rest of my life from the policeman Javert.

Javert

The law is the law. You answer for what you do. Crime does not pay.

La ley es la ley. El que la hace la paga. El crimen no paga.
