Nauta

It is almost summer. Every day, it gets hotter and hotter. If there is something we need more than ever in summer, it is water. We need to drink a lot of it, and we enjoy bathing in it.

Es casi verano. Cada día se hace más y más caluroso. Si hay algo que necesitamos más que nunca en el verano, es el agua. Necesitamos beber grandes cantidades de ella y nos encanta bañarnos en ella.

Just like us, the ancient Greeks got their water from rivers, lakes, fountains and springs. The Greeks believed that each of these bodies of water had a spirit that protected it and kept it clean and fit to drink. The gods of the rivers were called Potamoi, and the nymphs of the fountains, lakes and springs were called Naiads. Every city, town or village was built near a source of water. And its inhabitants venerated the spirits that lived there.

Al igual que nosotros, los antiguos griegos sacaban su agua de ríos, lagos, fuentes y manantiales. Los griegos creían que cada uno de estos cuerpos de agua tenía un espíritu que protegía ese agua y la mantenía limpia y potable. Los dioses de los ríos se llamaban potamoi y las ninfas de las fuentes, lagos y manantiales se llamaban náyades.





In the picture above is a famous river god, Asopos. He is with some of his daughters, who were among the most beautiful of Naiads.

En el dibujo de arriba está Asopo, uno de los más famosos de entre los dioses de los ríos. Con el están algunas de sus hijas, contadas entre las más bellas de las náyades.

Maybe because children love to play with water, the potamoi were believed to be the guardians of boys and the naiads the guardians of girls. They also helped children become adults, teaching them how to flow along the river of life.

Tal vez porque a los chiquillos les encanta jugar con el agua, a los potamoi se les consideraba los guardianes de los niños y a las náyades las guardianas de las niñas. También ayudaban a los niños a convertirse en adultos, enseñándoles a fluir con el río de la vida.

We´re the real article. We are huckleberries. In Spain, some people are said to be as rural as poppies. In America, you can call someone who isn´t sophisticated a huckleberry. The picture above is from an article on the wonderful huckleberries of Oregon. We´re also called blueberries, for an obvious reason.

Somos el auténtico artículo. Somos huckleberries, es decir, arándanos. En España se dice que algunas personas son tan del campo como las amapolas. En Estados Unidos, puedes llamar a alguien que no es demasiado sofisticado un arándano. La foto es de un artículo sobre los estupendos arándanos de Oregón. También nos llaman bayas azules, por una razón evidente.
