Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Artemis and Endymion / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Artemisa y Endimión

Nauta

Artemis is goddess of the moon. We Romans call her Diana. She is also called Selene. She is very independent and athletic. A past mistress with her bow and arrow, she and her best friends, the forest nymphs, protect the flora and fauna of forests from evil hunters, abusive woodsmen and others who are a threat to their existence. We showed you a sculpture of Artemis and her sacred grove at Nemi in the 28-March-08 post and you can see her most famous temple in the 23-June-08 post.

Artemis has a pet hind. It is white and it has golden horns and silver hoofs. Her tree is the cypress that points at the sky. Her favourite flowers are white, like the moon. She likes white poppies, that can make people sleepy and jasmine that perfumes gardens at night and waterlilies, that float in ponds like the moon´s reflection.

The fellow who is asleep on a crescent moon at the bottom of the drawing is Endymion. Endymion is very popular with poets because he is a poet himself. He spends most of his time asleep, dreaming beautiful dreams. Endymion and Selene fell in love and had fifty daughters called the Menai. These daughters are the fifty Greek months that have to pass from one set of Olympic Games until the next. You know how the Olympic Games are held every four years. Well, in Ancient Greece, it was every fifty months.

Byron

I´m back and I´m indignant. I want to protest about the Olympics too! I have a few things to say on this subject.

He vuelto, y estoy indignado.

Move to the next post then. You´ll get to say all you want to say there. I have to get on with the Mini Quiz.

Mini Quiz

I - This time you get to ask the questions. Do you have any questions about the things I´ve told you and the pictures I´ve shown you? You need to have at least five. And remember, you have to ask a prize question too.

II - Only one more thing. Do you know you can take the bullet train directly to a city close by and see the ruins of a temple that was built for Artemis? Which city am I talking about?

Keats

I´m indignant too. I wrote a really good poem called Endymion. I should be featured on this post. Why does Byron always have to steal the show?

Yo también estoy indignado. Escribí un poema realmente bueno titulado Endimión. Me toca salir aquí.

Byron

Because I´m the handsomest?

¿Porque soy el mas guapo?

Keats

Here we go again!

¡Ya empezamos!

Byron

Because I´m a man of action!

¡Porque soy un hombre de acción!

Shelley

Will you stop squabbling? Men of action can get along with those that prefer the contemplative life.

Gentlemen, please move to the next post! And don´t forget to return in September. I´m going to talk about poets´ festivals. Unfortunately, they are linked to Dionysius, the partying god.
