Southern Writer Kate Chopin / La escritora sureña Kate Chopin

Today we present Kate Chopin, French-Irish creole writer who wrote about the South of the U.S.A. and who took women seriously.

Text in English, Advanced Level:

Did a nineteenth century wife really need to become a widow to be happy? Writer Kate Chopin may have thought so.

Kate Chopin, of Creole and Catholic origin,  was born in St. Louis on the eighth of February of 1850. At the age of five, Kate was sent to Sacred Heart Academy, and there she learnt to make her own decisions and to manage her money. Her father was a successful businessman, but when he died, Kate went to live with her grandmother and great grandmother. These women, like her mother, had lost their husbands while still young and never remarried. They taught Kate to live her life without fear. Kate married and moved to New Orleans. When Kate's husband died leaving her with six children and very important debts, Kate moved back to St. Louis to live with her mother, but when this lady died too, Kate fell into a depression. Her doctor adviced her to write professionally. This would distract her from her problems and perhaps she could earn some money. Kate never made much money writing, though she did manage to publish most of what she wrote. She had to live on the money she inherited from her mother. But  Kate did produce two collections of fine short stories, Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie and two good novels, At Fault and The Awakening.

At first she was considered a regional writer, for her writings were full of local colour, but when she published her second novel, people finally noticed that she was more than that. This novel, influenced by Darwin's The Descent of Man,  was at first considered immoral, but a decade after her death in 1904, she was recognized as one of the leading writers of her time. However, because she was much ahead of her time, touching subjects such as interrracial relationships and presenting women who fought against suppression, she had to be rediscovered in the 1950s and The Awakening is today one of the five top novels in many literary courses.

Now we will summarize one of her short stories, The Story of an Hour. It is about a woman named Louise who suffers from heart disease. When Louise's husband is thought to have died in a railroad accident, Richards, a friend of Louise's husband, informs Louise's sister, and they both then go to see Louise, fearing how the news they have to give her will affect her health. Louise bears no animosity to her husband and reacts with immediate grief when she is informed of his death. But when she retires to her room to grieve in private, she finds herself invaded by a sense of freedom and has to admit to herself that she is now happier than she was. But her happiness is not lasting. In barely an hour, she is informed that her husband has not died, and the second shock she suffers when she hears this kills her.
